With St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon, Kingston Police are enforcing the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) once more.
From March 11 to 18, Kingston Police will be “actively addressing” student parties and issuing fines accompanied by a mandatory court summons under the UDSI, according to a City of Kingston press release. Part I Court Summons—a court date with or without a fine—will be issued for violations of the Liquor Licence and Control Act.
During the UDSI, emergency services will increase their presence in the University District, where most Queen’s students live. Kingston Manager of Enforcement Services Kyle Compeau encourages students to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day responsibility.
According to the City, nuisance parties are gatherings which include public intoxication, the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages, damage to property, and excessive sound by one or more attendees.
of Bylaw and Police have been visiting students’ houses in the University District, educating residents on the of the UDSI and leaving behind notices about the possible sanctions. In preparation for St. Patrick’s Day, the AMS Social Issues Commission launched the second part of its Know Your Rights campaign breaking down the technical jargon for students and informing them on how to interact with Kingston Police.
The Police Liaison Team will be in campus buildings and residences throughout the week raising awareness about the UDSI. They’re identifiable by their blue vests with shoulder flashes.
The UDSI routinely comes into effect over Orientation Week, as well as Homecoming and St. Patrick’s Day weekends. In recent years, the timeframe for the UDSI has been expanding.
