The Get Alongs to play The Toucan

Sometimes the best things in life are free.

Kingston’s favourite Irish pub, The Toucan, continues its tradition of talented live musicians, and it won’t cost you a cent.

Playing on Jan. 24, Toronto-based band The Get Alongs, ed by Queen’s own Jinx and Colour Theory, it’s a bill you won’t want to miss.

Describing themselves as “4 Joes from Toronto,” and with a debut album under their belt, The Get Alongs are worth catching before they head back to the big city.

Study up on songs like “Tongue Tied & Twisted,” “Rain Magnificent,” and “Across The Lawn” so you can sing all the words.

Nicolas Altstaedt and Fazıl Say bring classical expertise to Bader Centre

If classical music is more your style, there’s something for you too.

The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts presents German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt and Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say on Jan. 30, playing in the Jennifer Velva Bernstein Performance Hall.

Both musicians bring great talent and years of experience with international acclaim to Kingston. Altstaedt, described as “one of the most sought-after and versatile artists today,” combined with Fazıl’s decades of experience is a night of classical music excellence.

Performing one of Say’s own compositions, alongside pieces by Benjamin Britten, Johannes Brahms and Samuel Barber, the two musicians are sure to steal the stage.

Art supply swap encourages sustainability

One person’s trash is another’s treasure.

In addition to its exhibitions that show throughout January, Union Gallery is set to bring the art community together in the name of sharing and sustainability.

Partnering with the AMS Commission of Environmental Sustainability, the gallery is hosting the Free-For-All Art Supply Swap @ Union Gallery, on Jan. 29.

The event encourages artists to bring supplies they find themselves neglecting, to swap and share with the wider community. Open to all, and free of charge, who knows what you might trade.

Froid’Art doesn’t mind the cold

Returning for another year, catch Martello Alley’s Froid’Art outdoor exhibition before it melts.

Featuring 10 blocks of ice, illuminated, with artwork frozen inside, it’s a unique exhibition strewn across downtown Kingston, set to be installed on Jan. 25.

With the concept first brought forth by David Dossett, it features works by Dossett himself, David Gilmore, Helen Baker, Jabra Mitwasi, Joanne Gervais, Leith Channen, Lucy DeSousa, Pat Shea, and Piotr Bielicki, with many artists paying homage to Kingston in their pieces.
