Queen’s University announced it is renaming the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) to Bader College on Monday.

The name change comes after consultation and review of the international and national higher education landscape, according to a press release. A new brand identity will accompany the name change in the coming weeks.

“This new name will signal to the international community the importance of the castle to our university and its pivotal role in Queen’s new global engagement strategy,” Principal Patrick Deane said in the press release.

The BISC was created in 1993, offering students the ability to take Queen’s courses at the University-owned Herstmonceux Castle in the UK.

Currently, the BISC offers first-year programming to students in some faculties, as well as “specialized” programming for upper-year and professional students.

The University consulted alumni groups, community in the UK, BISC faculty, and other partners in the renaming process.

The new name Bader College is meant to honour Alfred, LLD ’86, and Isabel Bader, LLD ’07 after their donation of Herstmonceux Castle.

Bader Philanthropies and the Bader family have donated funds to other development projects at Queen’s. This includes $31 million donated to the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts building.
