Gaels end season with loss

The women’s basketball team split two games last weekend at home. The third-placed Gaels were up against the fourth-place Ottawa Gee-Gees last Friday night and won 82-74. Post Erin Skippon lead the team with 19 points.

On Saturday the Gaels were against the Carleton Ravens who had beaten them 64-62 in their last meeting on Jan. 22. They suffered a similar loss last Saturday 47-40.

Carleton gained an early 6-0 lead, and led 30-20 at the half.

A struggle to find open shots had the Gaels’ offence largely stagnant the whole night. By the fourth quarter Queen’s couldn’t overcome the deficit despite a late push. Skippon led the team in scoring once again with 13 points. Guard Brittany Moore said despite the loss, the Gaels were strong defensively.

“The last few games we’ve let the other teams score 70 points or above,” she said. “That was really our focus this week; picking up our defence and keeping it a low scoring game.”

Head coach Dave Wilson said there were flaws in his team’s play that need to be fixed before their first playoff game last night against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. “It was a bit of a disappointing performance,” he said. “We didn’t take good care of the basketball. We turned the ball over way too much to be successful at this level of play,” he said Wilson said mistakes against the Ravens cost his team the game.

“[Ravens head coach Taffe Charles] is just looking to see what he can exploit in weaknesses,” he said. “His kids are very well trained in what they run and know what to look for and try to find the weakness in our defence.” For the result of the Gaels’ OUA quarterfinal matchup against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues go to queensjournal.ca and click on “Sports.”
