Gaels see mixed results against Mustangs.

The Gaels’ football and Women’s Rugby teams travelled to London, Ont., in an attempt to spoil the Western Mustangs’ homecoming celebrations.

Women’s Rugby

The Women’s Rugby team took to the pitch on Sept. 27 against the Mustangs, winning by a decisive 69-point margin and shutting out their rivals while retaining their undefeated record.

Offensively, the Gaels were led by first-years Eva Johnston, Comm ’28, who scored three tries for the Gaels, and Kennedi Stevenson, ArtSci ’28, who scored two of her own.

The presence of young Gaels’ talent offers promising prospects to keep an eye on as the Women’s Rugby program continues to develop.

Siobhan Sheerin, ArtSci ’25, Chloe Daniels, Comm ’25, Tattyannah Jackson, ArtSci ’25, and Rachel Cullum, ArtSci ’26, also scored tries for the Gaels. Alongside the stellar boot of Lizzie Gibson, ArtSci ’25, who converted seven tries adding to their point tally, the Gaels drowned out the Mustangs 69-0.

The Women’s Rugby team will play the McMaster Marauders on Oct. 5 at Nixon Field, marking the last game of the OUA regular season. Should the Gaels secure their sixth straight victory of the season, they’ll go into the OUA playoffs as the first seed for the second consecutive season.

Men’s Football

The Men’s Football team looked to defend their third seed position against the 3-1 Western Mustangs on Sept. 28 in London, Ont.

The Gaels held off the Mustangs’ high-powered offence for much of the first half, only allowing five points up until the 11-minute mark of the second quarter, when the Mustangs stormed down the field and punched home two short rushing touchdowns.

Just after Western added a rouge, receiver Logan Walton, ArtSci ’28, and quarterback Anthony Lio, Kin ’27, connected on a 29-yard touchdown, ending the first half 20-7 for the Mustangs.

Throughout the second half, the Mustangs heated up offensively, adding two more touchdowns, a safety, and a field goal. Queen’s only points came from a Lio to Nathan Falconi, ArtSci ’27, alongside a Tyler Mullan, ArtSci ’26, extra point.

The Gaels’ loss marked the end of their four-game win streak, dropping them to fourth place in the OUA football standings, where they’re tied with the Guelph Gryphons.

The Gaels have another tough test next week, where they’ll play the first-place Laurier Golden Hawks on Oct. 5 in Waterloo, Ont.
