The incident occurred just before midnight on Sept. 23.

Less than two weeks after a double homicide on Montreal St., concerns are escalating regarding safety in the University District.

Police were called to a home on Frontenac St. near Brock St. after an individual violently attacked an elderly couple living in the house around 11:50 p.m. on Sept. 23. In a public statement, the Kingston Police said the incident was a targeted attack, with the assault necessitating both victims being brought to Kingston General Hospital with “serious injuries.”

Before the police officially deemed it a targeted attack, a neighbour suggested the incident seemed suspicious as the area has a high student population, they told The Whig. “I also think it’s strange that it’s the one house on the block that doesn’t have students,” the neighbour said. “I wonder if it was a targeted thing because it seems not random.”

Despite extensive police efforts, the suspect remains at large after fleeing the scene before officers arrived.

In a statement to The Journal, Kingston Police Cst. Anthony Colangeli said they were unable to provide more information on the ongoing case, and an effort was being made to maintain the investigation’s accuracy.

“We always want people we are interviewing to rely on an independent recollection of the event which is sometimes why the information we share is limited. This protects the overall integrity of the investigation,” Colangeli wrote.

In their public statement, Kingston Police reiterated the ways that individuals can protect themselves from this kind of incident, reminding citizens to ensure exterior doors and windows are locked, especially while away from home. All exterior lighting and security camera systems in the home should be checked to ensure they’re working properly.
