New Journal editors elected

Flegg, Hickman win 26 votes to seven; Flegg first single editor in chief in nine years

Next year’s Journal editor in chief and managing editor were elected Tuesday night.

Twenty-six people voted in favour of editor in chief candidate Erin Flegg and managing editor candidate Angela Hickman, and seven voted in favour of Harrison Smith, running for editor in chief.

Voter turnout was 58 per cent.

Flegg said the campaign gave Hickman and herself the chance to map out their plans for next year.

“We sat down and discussed all the things we felt that went well and what went badly this year, and decided what we wanted to see next year,” she said. “We had meetings with all of the people we felt were involved with all the things we wanted to do and we spoke to the people we thought would be affected by those things and would have input.”

Hickman said she thinks the transition from having two editors in chief to an editor in chief and a managing editor will be a good change for the Journal.

“I think it will clarify a lot of things in of how things work in our hierarchy,” she said. “It gives people a figurehead.”

Outgoing editors in chief Katherine Laidlaw and Anna Mehler Paperny said they’re confident in next year’s team.

“It will be interesting for the Journal to have an editor in chief and a managing editor, because we haven’t had that for about 10 years,” Mehler Paperny said, adding that she’s glad Smith also ran.

“[Elections mean] people running have to prove themselves, and people voting have to evaluate them critically.”

Laidlaw said she thinks Flegg and Hickman are headed in the right direction because of the experience they have.

“They were definitely the team that should have won, and I think the Journal will be successful if they continue on the track they’re going on.”
