I’m a talker, but this year we’re all going to find out if I’m also a writer.
As an incoming MEd student expected to deliver a thesis eventually, I’m optimistic this column will serve dual purposes: I’ll become a wordsmith and you, the student, will feel more connected to the Office of the Rector with each ing submission.
Speaking of, hello, my name is Niki, and I’m your Rector.
The Rector is the third highest officer of the University, next to the Chancellor and Principal. I was elected by undergraduate and graduate students to be a strong advocate and steady facilitator for our best interests. It’s my number one priority and an honour to take on this responsibility.
This is a daunting duty but to extend upon The Amazing Spider-Man’s famous words, with great responsibility comes great opportunity.
The Rector is intended to be the thread between students and the istration. I hope to have conversations that call-in and identify concerns, find common ground, and move forward in a way that ensures the fabric of our school is strong and safe for everyone. This comes through many different avenues—including participating in Queen’s Board of Trustees, AMS Assembly, SGPS Council, Senate, and several working groups and committees to influence decisions related to the student experience.
As a student government veteran, I’m no stranger to The Journal. I’ve been the topic of several articles spanning from my artwork and initiatives to policy and elections.
Last year, I decided to open the curtains to the illustrious student journalism house that seems to be full of functionally nocturnal people. Despite requiring a full eight hours of sleep, I was appointed to The Journal Advisory Board via my role as the AMS Vice Chairperson.
Now, I’m ready to contribute monthly as a mechanism for sparking conversations about campus news, concerns, and achievements . I’ll explore and break down student and University governance systems into digestible pieces you can scan while flipping through the paper as you pretend to do work in CoGro.
At your service,
Niki

This is a good start. I would like to see more done for sake of transparency from the Rector office. How are university dollars being spent on Rector?
