Sports in Brief: Tough losses and two sweeps

A mixed weekend for Queen’s Varsity Sports

Men’s Hockey

The Queen’s Men’s Hockey team saw their six-game winning streak come to an end this weekend on a trip to Waterloo.

Their first stop was on Feb. 2 for a game against the Waterloo Warriors.  The Gaels made their way through five minutes of overtime, where Queen’s defensive player Jacob Paquette, ArtSci ’24, scored to give the Gaels a 4-3 victory.

The three other Queen’s goals were scored by Jakob Brahaney, ArtSci ’24, who scored twice, and Jonathan Yantsis, ArtSci ’24, who contributed one goal.

The next day Queen’s found themselves facing their ninth loss of the season after the Gaels took on the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The final score was 4-2 with Queen’s goals from Nolan Hutcheson, ArtSci ’25, and Paquette.

The Gaels now have a record of 17-9 this regular season. They’re sitting in the fourth spot in the OUA East division, ranked tenth in the U SPORTS rankings.

Their next game is Feb. 8 against the RMC Paladins for the anticipated Carr-Harris Cup. The puck drops at the Slush Puppie Place (formerly the Leon’s Centre) at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Hockey

The Queen’s Women’s Hockey team saw two losses on this weekend’s road trip.

Taking on the Guelph Gryphons on Feb. 2, Queen’s forward Alyson Reeves, Comm ’24, set the Gaels up for a 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Gryphons got those two goals back and ended up winning the game 3-2.

With the opportunity to split the weekend’s games, the Gaels traveled to St. Catherine’s to face off against the Brock Badgers.

The Gaels were scoreless and lost the game 3-0.

Queen’s Women’s Hockey now has an even season record with 12 wins and 12 losses. They’re third in the OUA East Division and unranked by U SPORTS.

Their next game is at the Memorial Centre against the Nipissing Lakers on Feb. 10. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m.

Men’s Volleyball

The Queen’s Men’s Volleyball team travelled to North Bay this weekend for a double-header against the Nipissing Lakers.

On Feb. 2 the Gaels swept the Lakers three sets to none. Erik Siksna, Comm ’24, lead the Gaels for kills with 11. The scores of each set were 29-27, 25-20, and 25-17.

The next night, the Gaels won again, this time three sets to one.

Siksna led the Gaels for kills again, this time with 18. The scores of each set for the Gaels were 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-18.

The Gaels have a 12-4 season record, are third in the OUA, and are ranked fifth by U SPORTS.

They play again in the ARC against the OUA first place Guelph Gryphons on Feb. 8 and 9.

Women’s Volleyball

The Queen’s Women’s Volleyball team secured back-to-back victories when they played against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay on Feb. 2 and 3.

On Feb. 2 the Gaels swept the Thunderwolves in three sets. Claire Carter, Comm ’27, led the Gaels for kills with 15. The scores of each set were 25-15, 25-20, and 25-23.

The Gaels won the next day with a 3-1 victory. This time, Mary Stewart, ConEd ’25, lead the Gaels for kills with 16. The scores for the Gaels were 25-13, 25-15, 20-25, and 25-17.

Queen’s Women’s Volleyball now have a 14-2 season record, are second in the OUA standings, and are ranked fifth by U SPORTS.

They return to the ARC Feb. 9 for a two-game weekend against the Guelph Gryphons.
