Men’s soccer season getting back on track
The Gaels found their footing at home last weekend, beating the Nipissing Lakers 2-1 and the Laurentian Voyageurs 1-0.
On Saturday, Sep. 28, Matthew Reale opened the scoring off an assist from captain Michael Chang. Rookie Harry Clarke scored what stood to be the winner in the 70th minute. Nipissing scored eight minutes later, but their comeback was too little, too late.
Against Laurentian on Sunday, Reale returned the favour and set up Chang for the deciding goal at the 35 minute mark.
The men played Carleton this past Thursday and made a game of it throughout the first half, keeping the shots even at one apiece and the score even at 0-0.
A pair of Gaels, goaltender Tyler Gowdy and midfielder Noah Campagna, were making their season debuts, having been previously sidelined by injury.
In the second half, the Ravens pulled away, peppering Gowdy with five shots, two of which eluded him. The Ravens won by a final score of 2-0.
Of the Gaels’ final four games, three are against teams below them in the standings. If they can run the table, they stand to have much better seeding come playoffs. They are the sixth and final seed in the Eastern conference as things stand.

Cross country excels at Western Invitational
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the men’s and women’s cross country teams travelled to London for the annual Bill Salter Western Invitational.
The women’s team kicked off their 2019 season with a silver medal finish. They fell four points short of the Guelph Gryphons’ 42 points.
The men’s team made an impressive effort, coming in seventh place. Despite missing some key runners, the Gaels came out with some strong results, especially from fifth-year Rob Kanko and second-year Nathan Dehghan.
This weekend, the cross country teams will travel to Pennsylvania to participate in the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.

Basketball exhibitions getting underway
Queen’s basketball has been impatiently waiting for their season to start, and the time has finally come.
The men made a trip to Montreal and split two exhibition games, beating the Concordia Stingers 65-55 and losing to Université du Québec à Montréal 91-82. Their next exhibition is against St. Lawrence College on Oct. 10.
The women are on the road to Montreal currently, where they’ll play McGill tomorrow in their first tune-up match of the season.
Both teams are eagerly anticipating hosting the annual Tindall Invitational, which gives occasion for teams across the country to descend upon Kingston and compete with each other.
The men will be facing the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Memorial Seahawks, and the Regina Cougars. The women will play against the Concordia Stingers, the Cape Breton Capers, and the Brock Badgers.
All games will take place at the ARC between Thursday Oct. 17 and Sunday Oct. 20.
