You’ll be sure to be given aux if these are your playlist staples.

The FOCO countdown is on, with t-minus one day until Aberdeen St. is filled and everyone’s feeling a sense of normalcy with university events again.

Given the intensity and excitement surrounding both Homecoming and faux Homecoming, it seems only appropriate to create a special playlist to get into the FOCO spirit.

Here’s a list of some of my go-to pre-party songs to get your day started on a good note.

The safe choices

The perfect playlist has some of your favourites while also the popular songs everyone loves.

The classic songs you’re sure to find on nearly everyone’s playlists are “Pursuit of Happiness (feat. MGMT & Ratata) [Extended]” by Kid Cudi, “All Night Longer Remix (feat. B.o.B)” by Sammy Adams, “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, and “Five More Hours” by Deorro and Chris Brown.

These songs have a pop music sound paired with a nice beat that gives you something to dance to. They’re most popularly used for games of beer pong, flip cup, and stack cup.

They are sure to wake up your house nice and early to get the day—and possible party—started on a good note.

Throwbacks never disappoint

Throwbacks are my personal favourite when given the aux.

With nostalgia through the roof, throwback songs are great to sing and dance to with your friends before leaving the house. They never disappoint and are a go-to recovery move when you’re running out of songs to play.

Some of my favourites to get the house energy up before leaving are “Time of Our Lives” by Pitbull and Ne-Yo, “Sexy Bitch (feat. Akon)” by David Guetta, “Fire Burning” by Sean Kingston, “One More Time” by Daft Punk, and “Where Them Girls At” (feat. Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida) by David Guetta.

A song you’re sure to hear at any house party you step into—and at least played once every night at Stages—is “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” by ABBA. It’s a go-to dance party song; even the frat boys it. Listen to Syzz’s version if you’re more into clubbing music.

Everyone loves these songs for their iconic lines and good energy. There’s no way you won’t see your friends happy and dancing around—and that’s the best feeling when you know you’re the one controlling the music.

If you get any backlash for some of these, don’t feel too bad. , Pitbull’s been there, done that.

Veld 2.0

If you’re an EDM connoisseur or simply enjoy electronic music, these are the songs for you. Your playlist should no doubt feature works of Tiesto, Martin Garrix, Skrillex, and David Guetta.

Staple EDM songs like “Secrets (feat. Vassy)” by Tiesto and KSHMR and “Memories (feat. Kid Cudi)” by David Guetta are sure to get the party raging.

Equally as strong are “Gecko (Overdrive) [Radio Edit]” by Oliver Heldens and Becky Hill; “Like I Do” by David Guetta, Martin Garrix, and Brooks; and “Would You Ever” by Skrillex and Poo Bear.

Like most EDM songs, give it at least 30 seconds to get into the more intense parts of the song. If you judge “Gecko (Overdrive) [Radio Edit]” based on its first 17 seconds, you aren’t going to like it.

The same can be said for the first 30 to 40 seconds of “Like I Do” and “Would You Ever.” Give them a fair shot; listen for at least a minute or so before you start critiquing.

Another super hype song is “Another You (feat. Mr. Probz) [Extended]”by Armin Van Buuren, who headlined at Veld this past summer. I mention this song separately because if you’re not in a room of fellow EDM enthusiasts, I’m not sure too many people will know it. Regardless, it slaps.

***

While everyone has their own unique taste in music, these songs should get most audiences at Queen’s ready for FOCO. Whether it be the classics, the throwbacks, or the electronic ragers, you’ll be sure to have some successful song picks while on aux.

Happy FOCO and stay safe!
